Wingen Heights Secondary School in Shallcross received a much needed cash sponsorship from two very generous benefactors of R100,000.00. Mr. Lazarus Pillay of LSP Group and representing the LSP Foundation and well known businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Vivian Reddy of the Edison Group presented the school with a cheque at a special presentation at school.
The award winning school which received the KZN Premier’s Award three times, in 2001, 2002 and 2005 and which ranked among the top academic achievers in the country, embarked on a very ambitious project to build a school hall/ sports centre costing in excess of R2,0 million and was in dire need of funds to complete the third phase. At its annual fund-raiser, the Debutantes Ball at the Durban Exhibition Centre, Guest of Honour, Mr. Lazarus Pillay readily pledged this contribution in partnership with Mr. Reddy: Chairman of the Edison group. Both organisations have made significant contributions as part of their social responsibility initiatives in improving the quality of lives in our communities.
At the special presentation ceremony, Mr. Gordon Govender, the Principal, expressed the profound gratitude of the school and its community to the donors. He assured them that the funds have already been earmarked for the final phases of the school hall/ sports centre. This facility which will serve the needs of both the school and the community. He paid special tribute to both Mr. Pillay and Mr. Reddy for their generosity and their foresight in identifying historically disadvantaged communities as recipients. The donors, in the tradition of our forefathers, who landed on our shores 149 years ago, placed a high priority on education and who with their very meager incomes, still managed to build schools for their impoverished communities. Chairman of the School Governing Body Mr. Prem Ramnarain thanked the donors on behalf of the parents. He indicated that the school received no funding from the state for capital works projects and this contribution therefore was most welcome. The SGB looked forward to an ongoing partnership with our benefactors. Mr. Vivian Reddy in his address saluted the Principal and commended his management and SGB on their leadership and the many achievements of the school. Mr. Lazarus Pillay indicated that his Foundation was proud to be associated with the school and will continue to foster ongoing partnerships with the school and its community. Mr. Poobalan Govender: Ethekwini Cluster Head of Education, commended the school’s initiative in engaging with the corporate world to seek assistance in their upliftment projects. Schools currently face several challenges, including funding and it was indeed most welcome when benefactors chooseInstitutions that deliver for their social responsibility allocations. He thanked Mr. Reddy and Mr. Pillay for their generosity. The official opening of the school hall / sports centre is scheduled to take place in 2010.
